Satellite Internet For the Full Time RV'er

By Will Imanse

A large percentage of Full Time RV'ers today are business people. These are people that have had enough of corporate America or Canada, and have started their own business. Not only have they started their own business, they have also moved into RV's and taken their business on the road. The American dream of living in the suburbs, and commuting to an office in the city is starting to die as people realize that there is really more to the dream than what their parents taught them.

One of the things that has made this move possible has been the availability of Satellite and Cellular internet connections. These connections allow you to have an internet connection wherever you may be. In this article I will only concentrate on Satellite internet connections.

There are a number of companies that provide internet through satellite, among them are Hughesnet Satellite, Wildblue Satellite, Dish Network Satellite, Direct TV Satellite, Starband Satellite and Skyway USA Satellite to name a few. Through most of these companies you can get always on satellite internet packages starting at about $55 a month for about one megabit download speeds, and 128 kilobit upload speeds. There are packages available that will give you up to 5 megabit download speeds and 300 kilobit upload speeds but the prices start to climb into the $300 dollar a month range. The one megabit rate is not much slower than ADSL lite that many phone companies sell, and is enough for most web based business. Even the 128 kilobit upload speed is double what you would ideally get on a dialup connection.

The equipment required for satellite internet can be leased from the provider, or it can be purchased outright. The price seems to be all over the map, but on average the price for a manual system seems to be in the $1500 neighborhood, and a fully automatic system runs about $5000. The manual system you have to set up and align each time you move your RV. They are usually set up on a tripod arrangement and with a bit of practice can usually be set up in about 10 or 15 minutes.

The Automatic system on the other hand is a push button system. These systems are usually mounted on the roof of the RV. When you arrive at your destination, you either just click a mouse or push a button, and the system aligns itself. If you are not technically inclined, and you expect to be moving a lot, the automatic system would be the way to go.

$5000 may seem like a lot of money to spend on a piece of equipment, but when you really start to look at it starting any type of business takes a fair amount of money. You will need computers, printers, and any other equipment that your particular business requires. This particular piece of equipment gives your business freedom to move. There is almost no place in North America where you could not park your RV and run your business. About the only time you would have difficulty would be if you were on the north side of a large mountain, or under heavy tree cover. Any where else you should be able to get always on internet service through satellite.

Many people run businesses out of their basement, a spare bedroom or den, a garage, or a small office. Satellite internet allows you to move this business into an RV and allows you to live the dream of traveling all over North America as a Full Time RV'er. With an internet based business, your customer does not know if you are working out of that office with a view, a corner of your basement, from beside that fly fishing lake in Canada, or that beach in Mexico. So why not make the switch, and live the life of your dreams while you are still working.

On the internet you will find many support forums for Full Time RV'ers. Many of these forums have areas for people that are working or running a business full time on the road. An RV is nothing more than a house on wheels. So that business that you have been running out of your house can now also be run out of an RV. The availability of satellite internet has made this possible.

Moving out of a house will relieve you of many bills. Property taxes, water, sewer, power, telephone, cablevision and many more will be a thing of the past. So having to pay a bit more for internet should not really be a problem. After all this is one bill that can really give you the freedom that you desire.

About the Author:

Will Imanse is the author of the book Full Time in an RV. He has lived in an RV for over ten years. He was regularly questioned about the RV lifestyle. After repeatedly answering the same questions over and over, he started to search for a book he could recommend to potential Full Time RV'ers. After realizing that there was no single book available that would answer all the questions that he was fielding, he decided to write a book of his own, drawing on his own and other Full Time RV'ers information. The resulting work has had compliments from many people including Mike and Terry Church of Mexican Camping fame. The book can be purchased at http://www.fulltimeinanrv.comWill also keeps a blog with information out of the book, and answers to other questions that he receives at http://www.fulltimervblog.com.
